Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Life is enriched by a spectrum of experiences, including moments of suffering. When we encounter pain, rather than resisting or denying its existence, or attempting to suppress, evade, or control it forcefully, we can choose to approach it with understanding and compassion, transforming our relationship with discomfort.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychological therapy derived from the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness. It teaches a more suitable way to cope with emotions: rather than rushing to escape from pain, we can seek a comfortable space to observe and accept our thoughts and feelings. By learning to coexist with our experiences, we can also believe in our ability to take charge of our lives, build self-worth, and search for meaning.

Improving Access to Community Therapies (iACT®) adopts a therapy approach which target the common underlying processes of emotional distress, namely, Acceptance Commitment Therapy.
You can take a fresh look at how you deal with emotions and negative thoughts. It helps you learn to live alongside painful feelings while guiding you to focus on what really matters in your life.

Our actions are not driven by emotions

Our actions should not be driven solely by emotions; instead, they are rooted in the values we hold dear.
Throughout the sessions, participants are encouraged to reflect on their identity and the values they cherish, while also enhancing their skills in awareness and acceptance.
What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of third-wave behavioural therapy. As the name implies, this approach encompasses two fundamental aspects: it promotes acceptance to lessen the impact of distressing thoughts and feelings, and it fosters a strong commitment to one’s values, encouraging behaviours that align with those values. This dual focus empowers individuals to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, even when confronted with life’s challenges.
What are the differences between Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is designed to help individuals identify and change negative and unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. It focuses on correcting automatic or catastrophic thinking and guiding individuals out of cognitive traps. In contrast, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as a third-wave cognitive behavioural therapy, asserts that the attempt to “control” thoughts and emotions is often the root cause of many issues. Consequently, ACT places a stronger emphasis on encouraging individuals to accept the reality of their suffering. Distressing thoughts, emotions, and feelings are a natural part of life.
